Ho Chi Minh City can look simple from a coach window: colonial landmarks, new towers, traffic and a few famous museums. Spend time on foot and the differences between central Saigon, Chợ Lớn and the surrounding neighbourhoods become much clearer.
The old commercial centre, Chợ Lớn, religious sites, food streets and wartime addresses can comfortably fill two or three very different days. That variety is the reason the city deserves more than an arrival night before the Mekong.
