14-day Hanoi to Angkor: Vietnam and Cambodia history

The route brings together early political centres, imperial cities, Cham sites, trading ports, museum collections and archaeological landscapes across Vietnam and Cambodia. Historical explanation stays tied to the places visited each day, with lighter travel periods between the denser site visits.
Travel through Vietnam’s early political, imperial, Cham and Óc Eo sites, then continue through the lower Mekong to Phnom Penh and Angkor.
Meet the guide at Noi Bai International Airport and transfer to the hotel in central Hanoi. Keep the rest of the day free after the international journey, with a welcome dinner arranged around the main group arrival.
Leave central Hanoi for Cổ Loa, walking selected sections of the ancient ramparts and visiting the temple area while the guide explains the early fortified settlement and its Red River setting. Return to the city for lunch, then continue to the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long and its archaeological layers.
Visit the Vietnam National Museum of History in the morning, concentrating on early material culture and objects that provide context for the sites ahead. Continue to the Temple of Literature and selected streets of the historic centre, then keep the late afternoon free.
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Hue. Meet the central Vietnam team on arrival, check in and keep the remainder of the day light, with an optional riverfront walk or garden-house dinner when flight timing allows.
Spend the morning in Hue’s Imperial City, moving through the principal gates, courtyards and surviving palace precincts. After lunch, visit one royal tomb—normally Minh Mang or Tu Duc according to the final route and access—before returning to the hotel.
Leave Hue after breakfast and cross Hai Van Pass toward Da Nang. Visit the Museum of Cham Sculpture for an introduction to the sculpture, religious imagery and regional sites of the former Champa world, then continue to Hoi An and check in.
Depart early for Mỹ Sơn and walk through the sanctuary with time among the surviving temple groups, brickwork and surrounding valley. Return to Hoi An for lunch, then keep the afternoon free before an optional evening walk through the old town.
Spend the morning among Hoi An’s merchant houses, assembly halls and waterfront streets, then travel south along the central coast toward Quy Nhon. Arrive in the late afternoon and settle into the hotel.
Visit selected Bình Định sites associated with the former Cham centre of Vijaya, normally combining Hoang De Citadel with one major tower complex and the local museum collection. The guide uses maps and site plans to identify the different historical layers before returning to Quy Nhon.
Transfer to Phu Cat Airport for the flight to Ho Chi Minh City. After check-in, visit the Ho Chi Minh City History Museum when flight timing allows, then take a short walk through central or Cholon streets to introduce the southern urban setting.
Leave Ho Chi Minh City early and travel into An Giang. Visit the Óc Eo–Ba Thê archaeological landscape and local museum collections, then continue to Châu Đốc in the late afternoon and check in near the river.
Transfer to the river pier and travel by scheduled speedboat to Phnom Penh, completing border formalities en route. Meet the Cambodia team on arrival. When timing allows, visit the National Museum or take a short orientation through the riverside and central city.
Continue to Siem Reap by the most suitable confirmed flight or overland service. After arrival, begin the Angkor visit with Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm, adjusting the sequence to transport timing, heat and temple access.
Visit Angkor Wat early in the day, allowing time to walk the main galleries, courtyards and causeway before returning to the hotel. Transfer to Siem Reap airport according to the onward flight; an additional night can be added when departure timing requires it.
The guide gives short historical introductions where useful, leaving most of the visit for walking, looking and asking questions on site.
Museums support the route when they clarify objects and chronology, not as default fillers.
Exposed complexes are scheduled around climate and walking capacity.
